About Japan Festival Boston

To celebrate 60th anniversary of the sister-city relation between Kyoto and Boston, we will have workshops featuring Kyoto, a beautiful, one-of-a-kind city. In addition to that, we will have our regular booths, food booths, workshops, stage performances, cosplay contest, silent auctions, and much more! Details of each section are posted on the 2019 Festival Details page.

What is Japan Festival?

In 2012, the first Japan Festival Boston was hosted, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the gift of cherry blossom trees from Kyoto (the sister city of Boston) to Washington D.C. The Japan Festival Boston gives us a chance to share our culture with the Greater Boston area, and we have been expanding this festival each year. The festival is completely organized by volunteers (more than 380 volunteers in 2017), and is supported by many sponsors and contributors from the community.

Mission Statement

To show our appreciation and gratitude to Boston: We appreciate Boston for giving us our homes, our unparalleled education, thriving businesses, and many other opportunities.

To introduce authentic Japanese culture and to pass on our traditions to the next generation: We would like to give every person a chance to experience authentic Japanese culture at ”Omatsuri” (a Japanese-style street festival) without having to travel to Japan.

To bring together the community as one: We hope to develop a friendship with other communities within Boston but also throughout the U.S.

To ensure that Japan Festival Boston continues for the next 100 years and beyond

We are looking for more supporters to make this festival even greater–whether as a volunteer, a sponsor, or to just give us recommendations for the event. Don’t hesitate to contact us. Together we can create an engaging, entertaining, and educational Japan Festival Boston!
