Chado Urasenke Tankokai Boston Association

Glenn Sorei Pereira was a returning participant to Japan Festival Boston last year; Glenn-sensei is the Master Kyoju with Chado Urasenke Tankokai Boston Association, founded in 1956. Urasenke Boston currently comprises of 40 members, both men and women with ages ranging from those in their twenties to those in their sixties; in addition to providing classes on chadō, Urasenke Boston also conducts outreach programs, such as lectures and demonstrations at schools, colleges, museums, art galleries, social groups, senior housing, and even retail stores such as Whole Foods. The group has participated in the last three Festivals, where they provided demonstrations, and have interest in continuing to do so.

Glenn-sensei graduated from Urasenke Professional College of Chado in Kyoto, Japan, after which he began teaching at the Boston Association in 1983. When asked if there was something he would like to relay to the readers directly, he stated that “I would like the readers to understand is that chadō is for everyone. Men, women, children, old and young from every background. It’s not just a pastime for women as so often is assumed. It’s not some mysterious thing that we do but just living life to its fullest”.
